A homily is part of the liturgy of the word. It is the priest’s brief reflection on the readings, in which he outlines how the sacred scripture passages are relevant for the congregation of today.
The word “liturgy” derives from a Greek word meaning public work of the people. In the Catholic church, it refers to the official form of public worship we use for Mass and the Sacraments.
